2015年12月の暮れ。帰省のついでに東北のローカル線に乗ってみようと思い、只見線の始発駅、会津若松まで足を延ばした。東京は晴れていたのに、磐越西線に乗るとほどなくして雪。
It was the end of December 2015. I made a short trip around Fukushima and Niigata. There is a local Train called Tadami-line between the two regions. The line is famous for beautiful views and heavy snow. I like train trip, I like snow. So, why not.
1日目は合図若松に滞在する。教えてもらった蕎麦屋『鶯宿亭』で蕎麦とこづゆをいただいたあと、観光。鶴ヶ城に昇ってみても、視界は完全に雪。
City of Aizu-wakamatsu in Fukushima is the east end of Tadami-Line. The landmark, Tsuruga-jo castle had alredy been covered in heavy snow.
市内周遊バスに乗って白虎隊の墓に行ってみる。維新の歴史はさほど関心の範疇ではないのだけれど、まあ、有名どころだし、ね。お墓も雪。
Famous Byakko-tai’s burial place in notrh of the city. Byakko-tai was a platoon of child soldiers fought for old monarch during Japanese civil war in 19th century. They had committed suicide here because they wrongly thought they are defeated.
面白いことに、ローマのファシスト党から寄贈されたという碑がある。1928年。白虎隊の武士道精神に感銘を受けて、とのこと。
There is a monument endowed by Italian Fascist party of Rome in 1928. They honored Byakko-tai's spirit
更に、こちらは1935年、ナチス・ドイツの外交官 Hasso Con Etzdorf から贈られたもの。 忠義のために自害した少年兵というモチーフは、当時の国粋主義者たちのファンタジー的な民族意識に強烈にフィットしたんだろう。なんともやりきれない我々の歴史の一片。
This memorial stone was donated by Nazi Germany diplomat Hasso Con Etzdorf. It honors Byakko-tai’s spirit. I assume those nationalist are fascinated and even fantasized with child soldiers’ loyalty and self-sacrifice. It is an irony in our history.
墓の近くには、興味深い建築がある。栄螺堂だ。二重らせん状の建物で、入口から頂上を経て出口まで、1本の交わらない通路になっている。
Near the burial place, there is more interesting place. Sazae-doh is wooden construction of double helix tower.
頂上部分には千社札がいっぱい。これだけ貼られると呪術的な趣が出てくる。
Hundreds of visitor's name-stickers makes this place mystic.
温泉宿に向かう道すがら、武家屋敷にも脚を運んでみる。会津藩家老の家なんかを移築してまとめたものだそうだ。
There is a Samurai house museum in the south-east of the city.
ろう人形の着物女性がご主人をお迎えをしてる。いまとなっては落としたコンタクトレンズでも探してるかのような恰好だけど。
A wax doll of Kimono lady welcomes you. It looks like a woman searching her dropped contact lenses.
白く染まった庭に、南天の実の赤だけが鮮烈だった。ここから送迎バスに乗って、逗留先の温泉宿に。夜は街場の日本酒バル『會津蔵武』にて会津酒とこづゆやおでんを楽しんで、一泊。
In the snow, Red berries of Japanese sacred bamboo are remarkably blight.
I stayed at a hotel with hot spring bath near the museum. Next day, I went to Niigata by Tadami-line.
