東京2020大会オフィシャルマスコット「ミライトワ」と「ソメイティ」のプラモデルを、ガンダム用のカラーで塗装した。

久しぶりにガンダムの模型を作ろうと思い、専用の塗料とともに赤坂のビックカメラで購入したところ、1階の五輪オフィシャルショップでこれを見つけてしまったのだ。プラモデルである以上、こうやって遊ぶべきだと思う。
I found them in a official shop of the Olympic Games at Akasaka. Well, they are plastic model kits, I have a right to enjoy painting.
特に「ソメイティ」の市松模様のマントは、技巧的な造形で組み立てがおもしろい。このマントをカラフルにしようとおもったのが、そもそものきっかけ。ただ実際に塗装を始めるとマスキング地獄で、後悔した。
This "SOMEITY" has a checkerboard-like cape. It's an elaborate modeling and fun to build. My initial idea was to make it colourful with the original Gundam colors. Eventually I realized my idea was a torture to me. I needed a kilometers of masing-tape to finish it.
GSIクレオスの専用塗料の白と黄色が、意外なほど隠ぺい力が弱いというのも発見だった。グレーの下地塗装ではきれいに発色しない。子供の握りこぶしぐらいあるソメイティの巨大な頭はムラだらけ。凸パーツの眉の塗分けもむずかしく、ひどい仕上がりになってしまった。まあ遊びだしな。
I also discovered that the white and yellow of Gundam color (GSI Creos' new items) were surprisingly weak in their hiding power. It was impossible to paint a huge head (the size of a child's hand) evenly.
「ミライトワ」はザクカラー。こちらのほうが造形がシンプルなぶん、塗装も楽だった。合わせ目消しもできた。両キャラとも額にはオフィシャルロゴのシールを貼るための段落ちモールドがあるが、ヤスリでゴリゴリやって消した。そのため微妙なうねりができ妙に生物的な仕上がりに。
This "MIRAITOWA" was painted in Zaku color. This one is simpler to build and easier to paint. Both of the characters have a mold to put the official logo sticker on their foreheads, but I filed it. As the result, their round shape got subtle undulation and it made them oddly biological.
組み立てて、サフを吹き、無機質なパーツに色を付けていく。はみ出したエナメル塗装を溶剤でふき取る。やっていることは戦車やモビルスーツのプラモデルと同じなんだけど、すごく不思議な感触がある。ひと工程ごとに、「カワイイ」ができてくるのだ。
こんなプラモデルは作ったことがなかったし、自分が「カワイイ」を作れるとは思いもよらなかった。
逆に、では普段自分が作っているときに、何を目指して作っていたのだろう？ カッコいい？ 美しい？ 哲学的な疑問が頭をよぎる。
Assemble it, spray it, and retouch it. The process was same as other plastic model kit building. Yet, it was quite strange experience. I was creating "Kawaii" in every step of the way.
I'd never made a plastic model like this before, and I never thought I could make a "kawaii" one.
That made a different question; what am I aiming for when I was building "normal" kit like tanks or mobile suits? Cool? Beautiful? Philosophical questions come across my mind...
